Local SEO & Google Maps

You Don't Have One Google Ranking. You Have Hundreds.

Your position changes every few blocks. Most owners only ever see the one at their own front door.

Search your own service from your office and you will probably look fine. Drive three miles and search again. That second number is the one your customers actually see, and almost nobody checks it.

Why the map pack decides your month

Three Results Take Most of the Business

The local pack sits above the blue links, and it is where local intent goes first. Around 46% of all Google searches carry local intent, so this is not a niche channel — for most service businesses it is the channel.

What actually moves it

Where Local Rankings Actually Come From

Weightings below follow the Whitespark Local Search Ranking Factors survey, which polls working local SEOs each year. Tap any row. One of them you cannot change — which makes the rest matter more, not less.

What we do

The Actual Work, Not the Category Names

Local SEO is unglamorous and largely a matter of doing every small thing properly. Here is the list.

Grid-mapped rank tracking

We measure your position from dozens of points across your service area, not just at your pin. That is how you find the neighbourhoods where you are two spots away from the pack instead of forty — and those are the ones worth attacking first.

Profile rebuilt from the category up

Primary category chosen against what actually ranks in your market rather than what sounds right. Then every service listed with a real description, attributes, products, hours including holidays, and the Q&A section filled in — which you are allowed to seed yourself and almost nobody does.

A review engine, not a review request

A repeatable ask timed to the moment of highest satisfaction, made genuinely one tap. Reply templates for every rating including the bad ones. If you want the friction as close to zero as it gets, NFC tap cards put your review page on a customer's screen in about a second.

Citation and NAP cleanup

One canonical version of your name, address and phone, then corrected outward — Google first, then Apple and Bing, then aggregators, then the old listings from a previous address that are doing the real damage.

Service-area pages that are actually different

Real detail about each area: the neighbourhoods, the housing stock, the jobs you have done there, different photos. Twelve pages identical except the city name is the exact thing Google's doorway-page policy describes, and it is the most common way local SEO goes wrong.

Tracking that survives zero-click

Call tracking and profile-action reporting, because a growing share of local customers now call you straight from the listing without ever loading your website. Judge that by sessions and you will conclude something is failing while the phone rings more.

If you go to the customer

No Storefront? The Rules Are Different.

Plumbers, roofers, mobile groomers, contractors, cleaners — anyone who works at the customer's address rather than their own. This is the part most guides skip, and it changes the strategy completely.

Proximity becomes a filter, not a score

For a service-area business, Google is mostly asking a yes-or-no question: does this searcher fall inside the area you declared? If yes, you are eligible. Position is then decided by relevance and prominence rather than distance.

That is good news and a trap at once. Good, because you are not permanently beaten by whoever has the closer office. A trap, because declaring a huge service area to cast a wider net weakens your relevance signals across all of it. Broad coverage has been costing businesses rankings rather than winning them.

  • Hide your address. An unhidden home address on a service-area profile is one of the fastest routes to suspension there is.
  • Never use a virtual office or a mailbox. Misrepresenting your location is the leading cause of profile suspension, and Google is good at detecting it.
  • Declare a realistic area. The places you genuinely serve, not the places you would accept a job from.
  • Match your site to your profile. If the declared areas and your website's locations disagree, Google cannot verify either.
  • Get reviews from across the territory. For a business with no fixed pin, reviews spread across your area are one of the few geographic signals you own.

Three Things That Can Cost You the Profile

These get sold as tactics. They are risks, and the downside is losing an asset you spent years building.

Keywords in your business name

You will see competitors doing it and ranking. Google prohibits it and enforces against it, and it is one of the two leading suspension triggers. Use the name on your signage and your paperwork.

Bought or incentivised reviews

Detectable, against platform policy, and a perfect five-star record with no substance reads as fake to human beings anyway. A 4.5 with real detail converts better than a flawless 5.0.

Extra listings for one location

Creating a second profile to cover another suburb does not double your visibility. It splits your signals and risks both listings.

If an agency has ever suggested any of these to you, our guide on how to vet a search agency covers the other questions worth asking — including of us.

We Learned This in a Hard Market

Our own home market is one of the more competitive local fields in the Mountain West — legal, home services, healthcare and real estate are all genuinely contested here. That is where the methods on this page were built and tested, and you can read the specifics of how local search works in our home market or see the areas we currently work in.

Trades are the deepest part of the bench. We also publish a separate national resource for the building trades — marketing guidance for contractors — built with the same approach, free to read, no signup.

Local Search Questions, Answered Straight

Because proximity is one of Google's three stated local ranking factors, and your rank is calculated from wherever the searcher is standing. At your own address you are as close as it is possible to be, so you see your best possible result. That is also why a standard rank tracker is misleading for local: it reports one point. A geo-grid measures dozens across your area and shows you the real picture.

Google Maps generally moves faster than organic search — often 30 to 60 days for visible movement, where the blue links typically take three to six months. Profile fixes like a corrected primary category can move things within weeks. Review volume and citation cleanup compound more slowly. Anyone giving you a specific date is guessing.

In the map pack, only if you are a service-area business and that city is inside your declared area — and even then, declaring an unrealistically wide area weakens you everywhere. In organic results, yes, with genuine service-area pages that carry real local detail. What does not work is one page copied twelve times with the city name swapped; that is what Google's doorway-page policy describes.

There is no threshold, but BrightLocal's data shows businesses with 50 or more reviews are substantially more likely to appear in the local pack than those under 10. More useful than the total: keep them arriving steadily, reply to all of them, and do not chase a perfect score. Consumers trust 4.5 more than 5.0, because a flawless record reads as managed.

More than before, just differently. Roughly 40% of local queries now trigger an AI Overview, and those answers are assembled largely from what your site says about you. Your website has shifted from being the destination to being the source. That is also why traffic reports can fall while your phone rings more — which is why we track calls and profile actions, not sessions.

The wrong primary category, by a distance. It is the strongest relevance signal in the local pack and it is set once during setup, usually by whoever happened to create the profile, and then never revisited. The second biggest is treating the profile as finished. It rewards ongoing activity, and most profiles are abandoned the week they are verified.
