Denver SEO Glossary
The twenty terms a Denver business owner will hear from any SEO company, defined the way we would explain them across a desk.
No vendor uses these words exactly the same way. These are the definitions behind every page on this site, so that when we say "map pack" or "GEO" in a proposal you know what we mean and what you are paying for.
A to Z, roughly
The terms, and why each one matters in Denver.
- SEO
- Search engine optimization: the work of making a website rank higher in Google and Bing for the terms customers actually type. For a Denver business it covers the technical state of the site, the pages it publishes, the links and mentions it earns, and how well all of that converts into calls.
- Local SEO
- SEO aimed at a specific market such as Denver or a suburb like Arvada. It leans on the Google Business Profile, the map pack, citations and neighborhood-specific pages rather than national rankings. See local SEO in Denver.
- Local pack (map pack)
- The block of a map plus three business listings that Google shows at the top of local results. For most Denver service searches it is the first thing a buyer sees and the highest-value position on the page.
- Google Business Profile (GBP)
- The free Google listing that powers a business's presence in Maps and the local pack. Categories, services, hours, photos, reviews and posts all live here, and keeping it accurate is the foundation of local SEO. See profile management.
- NAP
- Name, address and phone number. Search engines and AI assistants compare these three facts across the website, the Business Profile and every directory; when they disagree, trust in the business drops.
- Citation
- A mention of a business's name, address and phone on another website, such as a directory or a chamber listing. Consistent citations support map rankings; inconsistent ones work against them.
- AIO
- AI optimization: structuring a business and its pages so they appear inside Google's AI Overviews and other AI-generated answers. See the AIO SEO system.
- GEO
- Generative engine optimization: earning citations from answer engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. These systems quote businesses whose facts are consistent and whose pages state plain, extractable answers. See GEO.
- AI Overviews
- The AI-written summary Google places above the traditional results for many searches. It cites a handful of sources, so being one of them matters more each year for Denver service businesses.
- AI Mode
- Google's conversational search surface, where a user asks a question and follows up in chat. It draws on the same signals as AI Overviews: entity consistency, quotable answers and trusted mentions.
- Agentic AI
- Autonomous AI systems that research options and recommend or even contact businesses on a user's behalf, without a traditional search ever happening. They choose from the same structured facts and reviews that AI Overviews read.
- Entity
- A uniquely identifiable business, person or place that search engines and AI models track independently of any single web page. Eye To Ad Media, Zach Wennstedt and 1001 Bannock St are all entities; consistent signals tie them together.
- Schema markup
- Structured data added to a page's code so search engines and AI can understand what the page and the business are. A LocalBusiness or Organization block with the correct name, address, hours and services is the most useful kind for a local company.
- E-E-A-T
- Experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust: the framework Google's quality raters use to judge content. For a local business it shows up as a real author, a real address, real reviews and pages written by someone who has done the work.
- SERP
- Search engine results page: everything Google returns for a query, including ads, the AI Overview, the map pack, the organic links and any image or video blocks.
- Backlink
- A link from another website to yours. Links from relevant, trusted sites remain one of the stronger signals of authority; links bought in bulk from unrelated sites are a liability.
- Canonical URL
- The one address a search engine should treat as the official version of a page when several URLs show the same content. A correct canonical tag prevents a site from competing with itself.
- Core Web Vitals
- Google's page-experience measurements: how fast the main content loads, how quickly the page responds to a tap, and whether the layout shifts while loading. See how fast this site is.
- Conversion rate
- The share of visitors who do the thing the page is for, usually calling, booking or submitting a form. A ranking that produces visits but no conversions is a cost, not an asset. See conversion optimization.
- Doorway page
- A page created only to rank for a location or phrase and funnel visitors somewhere else, with no real content of its own. Google treats doorway pages as spam, which is why every location page should be written for that market.
