What the studies found
The Local Pack vs AI Mode. A Local SEO Data study released June 10, 2026 ran 1,120 searches across seven categories (including plumbers, dentists, HVAC and lawyers) in 13 US cities, and compared Google’s Local Pack with AI Mode for the same query. 28.5% of the businesses in the Local Pack were missing from AI Mode. Comparing only the top three of each, overlap dropped to 48%. The publisher sells AI Mode tracking tools, so read it as one data point, but it lines up with the next study.
The three AI surfaces vs each other. BrightLocal’s Local AI Visibility Study (September 16, 2026, roughly 200,000 searches for about 1,300 business locations) found AI Mode and AI Overviews shared only 29% of the businesses they named, and ChatGPT overlapped with either one just 19 to 20% of the time. Tracked businesses appeared in Google Maps in 66% of searches, compared with 38% in AI Overviews, 33% in ChatGPT and 32% in AI Mode.
So ranking on the map and being named by the AI are related, but they are not the same achievement.
Why the lists differ
Different jobs. Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and popularity. The map pack is a ranked list of places near the searcher. An AI answer is a written recommendation; it has to find enough evidence to say something specific about you, and it only names a few businesses.
Different evidence. In BrightLocal’s data, business websites were 42% of everything the AI tools cited and Google Business Profile was 28.5%. A business with a strong profile but a thin website gives the AI less to quote.
Reviews weigh heavily. In the Local SEO Data study, businesses that appeared only in AI Mode had 49% more reviews at the median than businesses that appeared only in the Local Pack, and among plumbers the gap reached 337% (a median of 546 reviews versus 125).
The answers move around. BrightLocal found only about 20 to 33% overlap between results when the same search was repeated. A single check on your phone tells you very little; you need a few runs over a few days.
Distance still matters. Between 53% and 59% of AI picks in the BrightLocal study were within 5 km of the searcher, and storefront locations were mentioned more often than service-area businesses (33.6% versus 29.4%). A plumber who hides their address competes at a small disadvantage everywhere.
Does it matter if AI Mode skips you?
It matters more each year. Pew Research Center found that when a Google search showed an AI summary, users clicked a regular result in 8% of visits, versus 15% when there was no summary, and clicked a link inside the summary in just 1% of visits (Pew, July 2025). When the answer names three businesses and the reader stops there, those three get the call.
The map pack is still where most local customers start, so do not trade one for the other. The good news is that most of what earns an AI mention also strengthens your map ranking.
What to fix first, in order
- Make your Business Profile complete and current. Google’s own AI features guidance lists keeping Business Profile information up to date among its best practices, and says no special optimization is needed beyond that kind of good practice. Categories, services, hours, photos and service area should all be filled in and true.
- Build review volume steadily. The review gap in the studies is large. A steady habit of asking every satisfied customer beats a one-time push. See how to get more Google reviews.
- Give the AI something to quote on your website. One plain sentence at the top of each service page saying what you do, where and for whom. Prices or ranges. Your service area in words. Questions answered the way you would answer them on the phone.
- Keep your facts identical everywhere. Name, address, phone, hours and categories should match across Google, Apple, Bing, Yelp and your site. AI tools cross-check; conflicting facts make you harder to recommend.
- Test it properly. Ask ChatGPT, AI Mode and a regular Google search the questions your customers ask, three times each over a week, from where your customers are. Track how often you are named, not just whether you were named once.
A Denver example of the gap
Denver makes the distance effect obvious. A search from Cherry Creek and the same search from Thornton can return different map packs, and the AI answers shift with them. A business near the center of its customers’ searches has a natural edge; one serving a wide metro needs more reviews and clearer location content to make up for it. We break down how much the neighborhoods differ in Cherry Creek vs. Thornton.

Why am I in the Google Maps 3-pack but not in AI Mode?
They are built differently. The map pack ranks nearby places mainly on relevance, distance and popularity; AI Mode writes a recommendation and needs enough evidence to name you. A June 2026 study found 28.5% of Local Pack businesses were missing from AI Mode for the same search.
Do reviews affect whether AI recommends my business?
They appear to matter a lot. In the Local SEO Data study, businesses appearing only in AI Mode had 49% more reviews at the median than those appearing only in the Local Pack, and the gap among plumbers reached 337%.
Do ChatGPT and Google AI Mode recommend the same businesses?
Often not. BrightLocal’s 2026 study found ChatGPT overlapped with AI Mode or AI Overviews only 19 to 20% of the time, and AI Mode and AI Overviews shared only 29% of the businesses they named.
Is there a special way to optimize for Google AI Mode?
Google says there are no additional requirements or special optimizations needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Its listed best practices include keeping Business Profile information up to date. Strong reviews and a clear website are the practical levers.
How should I check whether AI tools mention my business?
Ask the questions your customers ask, in ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and a normal Google search, three times each over several days, from your service area. AI answers change between runs, so count how often you are named.
